Peter Gonter, born in 1751 and died in 1818. His father was also named Peter and some belief that he was also a gunsmith but this can not been proven by records. He maried Haga a daughter of an Reading gunsmith.

He was involved in the development of the American long-rifle, which is based on the German Jägerbüchse. Peter Gonter belongs to the Lancaster School.

During the revolution he supported the opposition to the British Government and made guns for the United States Ordnance Depatment. In the late 1790s Gonter owned a tavern and from 1803 to 1807 he was the treasurer of the Borough of Lancaster.

Kentucky Rifles but no many have survied.
